Carnival in Sardinia is a very important event for local people, which actively take part in the numerous appointments where masks, dances and songs are protagonist of feasts that are unique in the world. Traditionally, the Sardinian Carnival starts with the feast of Saint Anthony the Great (Jan 17th) and finishes on Ash Wednesday. The main appointments of Sardinian Carnival 2016 are between fat Tuesday and Thursday (Feb 4th – 9th). Do not miss the evocative carnivals of Barbagia region that (with their anthropomorphic masks and leather garments like the Mamuthones from Mamoiada village) recall old rituals, propitiatory dances, and a tight connection between humans and animals. The wild carnivals on horseback, such as those in Oristano (Sa Sartiglia) and Santulussurgiu (Sa Carrela ‘e nanti), are very interesting too and the carnival of Bosa, with its original disguise is very funny.
